Whenever I have the opportunity to return to my beloved California, I always go with a list of ‘musts’ in my head. This list starts with all the people I hope to see, followed closely by the food I have to eat (can somebody say In-n-Out and authentic Mexican food?!), and of course there are the places I want to go.
One of my absolute favorite places to visit is the Oakland Zoo. I know there are some with reservations about zoo culture, especially in light of recent events, but this will always be a place I love. In particular, the Oakland Zoo holds special meaning to me as this is where I have so many fond memories as a little girl. It’s truly special being able to take your own children to a place that holds such significance for you.
There’s nothing like seeing the pure joy dance across your child’s face as wonderment and awe take over with every giraffe, tiger, zebra, bear and primate she sees.
We went on Monday and it could not have been a better day. The weather was gorgeous, the crowd was light, the kids were listening (woo-hoo!) all the animals were visible, the rides were working, and we even had time to hop on the train which provided this glorious view of the Oakland skyline.
When we return to Georgia our nearest zoo will be a bit of a ways away. But we’ll make the drive, pull out the stroller, pack the snacks, slather on the sunscreen and enjoy the trip! Each time we go it brings happiness, laughter, and amazement to myself, my husband, and our little dears, and those memories are always worth making!
Do you have a zoo near you? What’s your favorite animal?
