Small Shop Spotlight: Bela Bracelets

A hair tie on the wrist is the universal symbol for a woman on the go. You never know when you’ll need to pull that hair out of your face, replace one that breaks, or lend one to a friend in need. 😉 Seriously, everybody needs them but they’re a far cry from stylish. Until now!

Bela Bracelets is today’s Small Shop Spotlight feature, and their hair tie bracelets are a must-have.

Fashion meeting function is always a win in my book. Let’s get to know the makers!

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself (family, interests, hobbies, etc).

We’re two sisters, Liz and Lauren, who love all things classy and affordable. Always on the hunt for a deal, you can frequently find us at the world’s best store (aka Target), delighting in cute toddlers, or sipping iced coffee as we Pinterest our way through our twenties.

2. When did you open your shop and why?

We have been a creative duo for as long as we can remember. From lemonade stands to art fairs, selling flowers door-to-door and bake sales, we grew up making and selling just about anything our mom would let us.

In the winter of 2015, Liz was searching for the perfect birthday gift for Lauren. A hair tie bracelet was a great idea, but there were absolutely no good affordable options out there. So Liz decided it was time to design her own and Lauren agreed! With the support of the rest of their family, Bela Bracelets (formally The Bangle Bear) was launched in January 2016!

3. How did you come up with the name Bela Bracelets? Does it have special meaning or significance?

Our family means the world to us! We’re the oldest two in a family of 6 siblings, and “Bela” is a combination of the nicknames given to us by our younger (and only!) brother. Growing up we had the adventure of spending 9 years living in Hungary, and “Bela” is a common Hungarian name with the English equivalent meaning “heart”, in the emotional sense of the word. You could say Bela Bracelets is close to our heart for several reasons!

4. What’s your favorite part about being a small shop owner?

Lauren: I love being able to stay at home with my daughters and at the same time have a creative outlet that doesn’t involve my mom brain. 🙂 Life has been a bit crazier since we started earlier this year but it’s been so much fun getting to work with my sister.

5. Do you have a favorite bracelet design (don’t worry, we won’t tell the others)?

Lauren: I love our scallop bracelets! It’s my go-to bracelet as it’s both functional and super cute with and without a hair tie.

Let me just say that I love these bracelets! The different styles and the fact that the hair ties can be changed out, means they can literally go with anything. I also adore the family aspect of this business.
