Small Shop Spotlight: Kid Licks

When my 4 year old asks to wear her princess dress, I know she will embody her royal role with every fiber of her being. So when I told her she could give herself a manicure and pedicure with her new polish from Kid Licks, she was thrilled! This food-based nail polish is made of organic vegetables, fruits and plants, making it edible and free from harmful chemicals! I’m so excited to feature Kid Licks for my Small Shop Spotlight, and learn more about the maker and the product both my girls enjoy so much.

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself (family, interests, hobbies, etc).

Hi, I’m Audrey! When I am not working on Kid Licks or playing with my kids, I am running on my own, or running with my children in the jogging stroller. I ran in college so I have a background there, and my goals right now are to break 18 minutes in the 5k and 3 hours in the marathon! 🙂 Our favorite thing to do as a family is to get out of town, and when we do we usually camp. We love backcountry camping best and we make all of our kids, except our 9 month old, carry their own backpacks. It’s a struggle sometimes but they’re getting really good at it; especially our 5 and 3 year olds. Our 2 year old isn’t always as enthusiastic about it and we sometimes joke that our advice for backpacking with a 2 year old is “don’t”. I think she’s growing to love it though, and even when we have to pick her up and carry her she’s loads of fun to have around.

2. When did you open your shop and why?

We started selling Kid Licks about a year ago. Before that, edible nail polish was a dream that started when our oldest child saw me painting my nails and wanted to do the same thing all by herself. It was then that I realized I did not want her using any kind of nail polish, even nail polishes marketed towards kids, because everything eventually ended up in her mouth and even the kids’ polishes out there were full of toxins.

3. What or who inspires you as you continue to create and grow as a company?

Our kids are my main motivation to grow our company because Kid Licks serves as much more than a safe nail polish for kids. It is a lifestyle that teaches them to make healthy choices. Our customers/followers are a huge motivation as well. Starting a company is not easy, but when we get feedback from people about how Kid Licks has inspired them it really makes me feel like we are getting somewhere. The other week I got a message from a father telling me that his daughter woke up in the middle of the night wanting to paint her nails. “She cried when we said she had to wait until the morning,” he said. Obviously we’re not trying to make kids cry, but knowing that she felt so strongly about our product was nice. We really try to make products that kids love, and not just parents. We’re very kid-focused in our product development.

4. Do you have a favorite polish/flavor? If so, what makes it your top choice?

Yes, we have a new flavor coming out soon. It is a surprise, but that it is one of my favorites. At the moment, our best seller is beet red, which is beautiful too.

5. What’s your favorite part about being a small shop owner?

I love that I can work while I am with my kids. It is a blessing and a curse because sometimes they’re bouncing off the walls while I am getting some work done. It’s great for them to be involved in the process though, and they are learning about business and organics at a young age.

How fun is this?! And might I add, the clean-up is so easy! I was a little nervous as I remembered my apartments strict policy on keeping the grounds clean, but the nail polish came off with water and a paper towel!

  1. This is fabulous! I’ve never even heard of edible nail polish, but it makes so much sense!
Also, she is my soul sister…I mean…#goals! My marathon time and 5k time are like twice as much as her and I think I’m doing well hahahahaha. Also, backcountry backpacking with four kids??? #hero. We’ve done it with one and it was…interesting. Haha.

  2. This sounds like an amazing product, and I’m pretty sure I need to get a bunch! My kiddo just (this past weekend) asked if I could paint her fingers pretty pink like my fingernails, but she still puts her hands in her mouth so I wasn’t thrilled at the idea, but this solves that concern!

  3. Wow that polish is amazing! I definitely need to buy a bottle for when my daughter is old enough to start painting her nails! P.S. Your daughters are ADORABLE!
