Tell me a little bit about yourself (family, interests, hobbies, etc).

I have been a preacher’s kid (PK) my entire life, and my mother retired from the Army National Guard. (Weird combo, I know) Needless to say, I grew up in a very conservative and strict household. I was born in Alabama but raised mostly in Georgia with two siblings (sisters and I am in the middle). I play the flute and drums. I also enjoy playing tennis. I have a bachelor’s and masters in Sociology. I married my best friend and high school sweetheart in 2008 and we have two wonderful boys. I love, love, love spending quality time with my family and taking my boys to see or experience things they have never seen or done before. And of course, I love shopping!

When did you open your shop and why?

My shop originally began as Two Lil’ Bros and launched in June 2015. My husband and I work for the Federal government full-time, which we all know can be pretty mundane, so we were looking for a creative outlet that included our boys while simultaneously encouraging them to be creative. With that goal, my husband and I began a t-shirt line for kids based on the daily adventures, sayings, and drawings of our two sons, Jackson and Mason.

In January 2016, we decided to change our brand name from Two Lil’ Bros to Beacon Threads. While we enjoyed designing fun, hip tees for tots, we wanted to do something more impactful, something that would really capture people’s attention, and hopefully change a life. With this desire, my husband and I prayed and asked God for guidance and direction. Well, God answered our prayers, and he reminded us of our responsibility as parents to share our faith with our boys and with others as Christians. In thinking of ways we could accomplish what we believe is our God-given purpose, we reflected on our church upbringing and the song, “This Little Light of Mine,” as well as our founding t-shirt design ‘blessings’. In the end, we could both hear God loud and clear. He was saying, let your light shine by sharing your faith with others and I will take care of the rest.

What or who inspires you as you create new designs?

Faith, family, and the thought of making a positive difference in the world.

Do you have a favorite? If so, what makes it so special to you?

The Child of God design is my personal favorite. I love it because it is about identity and knowing your identity is absolutely critical. The power to tap into our tremendous potential comes from our identity: how we define ourselves, and what we believe we can achieve. When we accept that we are His then we know that we can achieve the impossible, and God is always looking out for us.

What’s your favorite part about being a small shop owner?

The best part of being a small shop owner is developing relationships with folks who are as passionate about making God known as I am and seeing their kids rep the brand. Seriously, the day is made when I see that little IG notification that says someone took a photo of you and I open it to see that it’s a kid wearing one of our tees/snapbacks. It makes me feel like its present time on my birthday. LOL! Funny but oh so true.
