Small Shop Spotlight: Luca Love

This has been a long time coming, but I’m thrilled to shine the spotlight one of my favorite companies, Luca Love! These beautiful bracelets for a cause are ethically made by Colombian women, and the options to create an affordable stack are endless! I had a wonderful chat with owner Paulina, and I’m sure you’ll love getting to know her better too!

1.Tell me a little bit about yourself (family, interests, hobbies, etc).
Although I was born and majorly raised in Houston, TX, I grew up also considering Colombia home. This is where both of my parents are from. Every summer our family went Colombia and I also got to live there for four years. I was always asked which country I liked living in more and I learned that I couldn’t choose one over the other. They are both my homes. This made it hard to make a decision on where to live when my parents decided to retire and move back to Colombia. I always dreamt of a job that was somehow connected with the U.S. and Colombia, but never imaged it would be from a business I started! Currently, my dad, mom, and younger sister are living in Colombia while I am in Houston.

Traveling, adventures, and learning about different cultures is something I am very passionate about. My specialty is traveling on a budget! I don’t like when finances are an obstacle that keeps us from exploring all the beautiful places this world has for us. As far as hobbies, snowboarding and horseback riding are my favorite things to practice.

2. When did you open your shop and why?
Luca Love officially started the summer of 2015. I had just graduated from the University of Houston and didn’t have the heart to start a career in a company without giving my true passion a chance first.

3. What or who inspires you as you create new designs?
Our brilliant designer is my Mom. I can’t take too much credit. I guide her with colors according to upcoming seasons and trends. She gets inspired by nature, styles that will suit all ages, and even says she has ideas come to her in her sleep.

4. Do you have a favorite? If so, what makes it so special to you?
This is a hard question. I can not pick just one! Although I am in love a lot of the new styles my mom creates I would have to say that my favorites are the original designs that have stayed with us from the start. These include the Story of Jesus, Isa Cross, Barú and Ahva. These bracelets are signature pieces that defined our style.

5. Can you tell us a bit more about the charities you work with?
Apart from our principal cause, opportunity of employment, we have multiple charity causes we donate to. After starting Luca Love, I realized that there is an infinite amount of causes that I want us to be a part of and help support. It is a lot easier to make a difference in someones life if we work together, and I saw this possible to achieve through Luca Love. Throughout the months we have different causes or charities we raise funds for through our bracelet sales. They range from helping families in rural Colombia, donations in our local community, to non-profits organizations like The Rose, and Bucker International to name a few.

6. What’s your favorite part about being a small shop owner?
All of the connections and the family I have made. This starts with our amazing artisan women in Colombia. The love and gratitude they have towards being a part of this is what helps me stay motivated and determined to keep going and growing. They are such beautiful women inside and out. I am so thankful and feel honored to have them as a part of my team. I have also created so many friendships with people from all over the world because of Luca Love. The feeling of having people from all across the U.S and beyond come together to make a change is unexplainable. I have created so many wonderful friendships with people I have never met. It is so cool!

Last but not least, the special bond that has been created by family and friends that have believed in me and my dream from the start is something I truly treasure. With my sister, sister-in-law, and best friend all working heard behind the scenes, it’s truly a family affair! I love how connected we can all be despite the distances. The small role I play in bringing people together is my absolute favorite thing about being an owner. It is what brings me happiness.

The Luca Love team is currently composed of 9 artisans that hand make all of our bracelets.
My mom, Marleny, is in charge of bracelet design and of all of the women in Colombia. She hires, trains, and works with them on a daily basis. I could not do this without her! Click here to get more details and a few more pics of me and my mom.
